Volunteer of the Month - Ryder Burr

In just a few short months, Ryder has already made a lasting impression at Hobe Sound Nature Center. A Martin County native who grew up exploring the area’s wildlife and natural spaces, Ryder has loved the Nature Center since attending his first Summer Camp at age 8. Now, at 13, he’s come full circle as a volunteer and natural educator.

Ryder has a natural ability to connect with people, and his kindness and enthusiasm shine through in every interaction. Even in his short time with us, guests have gone out of their way to share how much they appreciate him. Whether he's talking with a visitor or sharing his love of wildlife, Ryder has a way of making people feel welcome and curious about the world around them. Outside the Nature Center, he stays busy playing travel baseball and fishing whenever he gets the chance.

We’re so proud to have Ryder on our volunteer team and excited to watch his passion for nature and conservation continue to grow!

1. How long have you been volunteering at the Nature Center?

I’ve been volunteering since the beginning of summer 2026. This was the first year I was old enough to apply, so I was excited to finally get started!

2. What inspired you to become a volunteer at the Nature Center?

I’ve wanted to volunteer at the Nature Center ever since I attended my first Summer Camp when I was 8 years old. I loved learning about the animals and nature, and I thought it would be really cool to come back one day and help out.

3. What’s one of your favorite memories from volunteering?

One of my favorite memories was Opal’s Opossum Party. I also really enjoyed the first time I got to hold a baby alligator. That was an experience I’ll always remember!

4. If you could spend a day as one of our ambassador animals, which one would you choose, and why?

I would choose Dwight, the tiger salamander. Other than the occasional climb, he gets to lie around without a care in the world all day.
