New Pollinator Garden Takes Flight at Hobe Sound Nature Center
A new pollinator garden is flourishing at the Hobe Sound Nature Center, thanks to the dedication of volunteers Cindy and Karlheinz Hass. The couple, who have lived in the area for 18 years, designed and planted the garden with a focus on native Florida plants, creating a habitat where visitors can witness the full life cycle of butterflies.
“We would come to the nature center regularly and see the small pollinator garden and think, ‘We could improve that!’”, Cindy recalled. Inspired by their past experience—Cindy had previously maintained a pollinator and hummingbird garden in Stuart—they took on the project with passion and expertise.
Following native Florida planting guidelines, the Hasses carefully selected plants that support local pollinators, ensuring a sustainable and educational garden. “Now people can come to the nature center and see first hand the life cycle, from eggs to caterpillars to butterflies,” Cindy explained.
Their work revitalizes an important ecological space and provides a hands-on learning opportunity for visitors of all ages. “Seeing our work come to fruition and knowing that people are going to be able to clearly understand nature—that’s the most rewarding part,” they said.
The new garden stands as a tribute to their love of nature and their connection to the Hobe Sound community, where they were friends with conservationist Nathaniel P. Reed. Thanks to their volunteer efforts, the Hobe Sound Nature Center now offers an even richer experience for those eager to learn about Florida’s native butterflies and the crucial role they play in our ecosystem.
