Hobe Sound Nature Center Names Dr. Hada Herring as New Executive Director

HOBE SOUND, Fla. - The Hobe Sound Nature Center (HSNC) is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Hada M. Herring as its new Executive Director, effective June 2026.

Dr. Herring succeeds Dr. Jill Griffin, whose leadership and dedication have strengthened the Nature Center's educational programs, conservation initiatives, community partnerships, and organizational growth. The Board of Directors, wildlife educators, volunteers, and supporters extend their sincere gratitude to Dr. Griffin for her years of outstanding service and commitment to the mission of HSNC.

A marine scientist, educator, and conservation leader, Dr. Herring brings more than a decade of experience in marine mammal conservation, environmental education, scientific research, and nonprofit leadership. She recently completed her Ph.D. in Curriculum and Instruction with a concentration in Science Education at the University of Florida and has held leadership, teaching, and research positions with the University of Florida, the University of Miami, and the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. Her work has focused on connecting communities with science, fostering environmental stewardship, and creating meaningful educational experiences for learners of all ages.

As Executive Director, Dr. Herring will lead HSNC's interdisciplinary team in delivering STEM-based environmental education programs, including hands-on museum experiences, summer camps, guided educational experiences, sea turtle walks, lecture series, and community science initiatives. She will also continue the Nature Center's longstanding partnership with the Nathaniel P. Reed Hobe Sound National Wildlife Refuge to protect and interpret one of Florida's most important coastal and scrub ecosystems.

Founded in 1961 by members of the Jupiter Island Garden Club, the Hobe Sound Nature Center has been a cornerstone of environmental education and conservation in Martin County for more than six decades. Established to connect residents and visitors with Florida's natural resources, the Nature Center continues its founders' vision by inspiring stewardship through education, wildlife conservation, and community engagement.

"Dr. Herring's unique combination of scientific expertise, educational leadership, and passion for conservation makes her the right person to advance the Nature Center's mission and guide it into its next chapter," said Michele Canney, Board Co-President. "We are excited to welcome her and look forward to building upon the strong foundation established under Dr. Griffin's leadership."
