Leneita Fix: Rebuilding the Reef: Florida’s Corals and a Future Worth Saving

  • Hobe Sound Nature Center 13640 Southeast Federal Highway Hobe Sound, FL, 33455 United States (map)

Join us Tuesday, March 3, 2026, at 6:00 PM for the fifth of our Spring Series “Nature’s Narratives” events, Rebuilding the Reef: Florida’s Corals and a Future Worth Saving, with Leneita Fix.

Leneita will offer a broad look at Florida’s coral reefs, the challenges they face, and the efforts underway to protect what remains. Through first-hand accounts, insights, and discussion, this event invites reflection on why reefs matter and what a hopeful future could look like.

Leneita Fix is the founding leader and Executive Director of The Reef Institute, a Florida-based nonprofit advancing coral reef conservation through science, education, and community partnership. Under her leadership, the organization has become a regional and Caribbean-wide resource, integrating advanced ex situ coral care with community-driven restoration.

The Reef Institute’s Rescue to Reef approach spans coral rescue, biobanking, indoor spawning, juvenile rearing, and outplanting—including pioneering work at 50-foot depths—and now safeguards over 8,000 corals representing 28 Caribbean species. Through this work, Leneita supports scalable restoration across the Caribbean by helping communities build locally tailored land-based coral systems, while engaging more than 60,000 people annually through education and outreach. With over two decades of experience in nonprofit leadership, curriculum design, and youth development, Leneita brings both strategic insight and heartfelt dedication to every initiative.

Inspire your mind. Move your body. Fall in love with the outdoors—one week at a time.
